Welcome to the Royal Academy of Surgical Assisting, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as RASA) is a Colorado corporation, headquartered in Denver, CO. In January 2012, RASA acquired the formally CAAHEP-accredited SA250 Program from NIFA, the National Institute of First Assisting, Inc.  (which voluntarily withdrew accreditation December 31, 2010). Since the acquisition, the curriculum has been revised to better meet the educational needs of today’s practicing surgical assistants. The online distance learning program has incorporated over 17 years of educational experience, and now represents a convenient and affordable pathway for operating room professionals to enter the expanded role of surgical assistant.

Today this updated state-of-the-art program is under new ownership as RASA’s Surgical Assisting Certificate Program for ST’s, CST’s, ORT’s, LPN’s, LVNs, IMG’s, FMDs, PA’s and other qualified allied health care professionals who aspire to become Surgical First Assistants. The program has been updated to reflect the most current textbooks and technologies, and although the program teaches a multi-specialty curriculum, multi-specialty clinical rotations are no longer required.

RASA purchased the licensing rights to some of the most superior training, materials and resources to offer the highest quality educational tools to non-MD allied health professionals. With its Wound Closure Training System™, multi-media online curriculum, optional Surgical Skills Lab and clinical internship, RASA graduates will feel confident and competent first assisting on multi-specialty surgical cases.

American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)RASA’s programs are approved by the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA).
Upon successful completion of program, graduates are eligible to sit for the Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C) exam.

The Royal Academy of Surgical Assisting also offers certificate programs for hospitals and surgical centers who would like to implement a first assisting team to improve productivity and patient outcomes, and to individual licensed and non-licensed practitioners wishing to acquire or master the surgical skills and knowledge to make a noticeable difference in the operating room and advance into the expanded role of First Assisting.

RASA utilizes proven teaching techniques, with its comprehensive multi-specialty curriculum and extensive video library, covering everything from operating room fundamentals to advanced wound closure and surgical skills. Upon completion of the home-study curriculum, students will be prepared and confident to enter their first assisting clinical internship at a local facility under the direct supervision of a board-certified surgeon(s) of your choice.

RASA’s optional Simulated Surgery Skills Lab offers an opportunity to immerse in an intense instructor-lead simulated surgery lab, where you will perform multi-specialty surgeries from cut-to-close, as both the surgeon and the first assistant. This exciting lab will build on the surgical skills you mastered at home with our Advanced Wound Closure Training System with video instruction, covering 23 basic to advanced surgical skills and multi-layer closure techniques.
